BASD Spring Sports Preview

Each Bellefonte Area High School spring varsity coach answered a series of questions about their team and the upcoming sport season.  We're excited to share their responses and for the readers to learn about these student athletes and the work that they have been doing to prepare for the season and their goals as we move into the spring months.

The Outdoor Track and Field Program:

What is your name and the sport that you coach?

Seth Miller - Outdoor Track & Field

What are some ways that the team has been preparing for this upcoming season?

We have been training both with technique and strength since December.

Other information that you'd like to share:

We have a great team and staff this season.  I'd like to see every student in the school become a part of our program!

We have three home meets:

Saturday, March 23rd vs. Brookville & Selinsgrove

Tuesday, April 9th vs. PO & Penns Valley

Tuesday, April 30th vs. East Juniata

It would be great to have students and teachers at these meets.

The Girls’ Lacrosse Program:

What is your name and the sport that you coach?

Kerry O'Hara - Girls' Lacrosse

What are some ways that the team has been preparing for this upcoming season?

We have had voluntary open gyms since July of last year and each time we have a very good turnout. This has enabled the girls to improve their basic skills and continue to grow.

Other information that you'd like to share:

We have six seniors that want to elevate this program to where we were a few years ago when we played for the District IV championship game. We have 20 girls on the roster, 10 of which are returning varsity letter winners. The addition of 10 other girls, 9 of which are freshman, will provide us a good foundation to continue the growth of Girls' Lacrosse.

The Boys’ Lacrosse Program

What is your name and the sport that you coach?

Rick Johnson - Boys' Lacrosse

What are some ways that the team has been preparing for this upcoming season?

Many of our players have been going to a lot of off season open gyms from the summer all the way until the week before the season started.  They've really organized themselves as players to show up to those off season workouts and banded together doing things as a team outside of school to bring new players into the fold and solidify the team.

Other information that you'd like to share:

We're just excited to have our biggest team numbers-wise yet, a really well behaved and fun group of kids to be around that are realizing this season could not only be fun but really successful for them and our program.  We're also excited to have a couple theme nights-- Mini THON night as well as teacher appreciation night for the first time as a varsity program.

The Baseball Program:

What is your name and the sport that you coach?

Jon Clark - Baseball

What are some ways that the team has been preparing for this upcoming season?

We have been holding open gym opportunities twice a week since January.  Many of the players have also been working out in the weight room and local gyms on their own time.

Other information that you'd like to share:

We have a good mix of returning starters, guys with experience, and new faces.  The guys are ready to get the season underway.

The Softball Program:

What is your name and the sport that you coach?

Erica DeVinney - Softball

What are some ways that the team has been preparing for this upcoming season?
