Born in Bellefonte on February 1, 1895, Martha Rebecca Barnhart Harper was the eldest daughter of James K. and Ollie Campbell Barnhart. She graduated from Bellefonte high school in 1913.

Martha Barnhart Harper is best known for her novels, which often had settings in Centre County. Among her most famous works are Red Silk Pantalettes, Bittersweet, and Winter Wedding. In fact, the locale of Bittersweet is at “Dowdy’s Hole” area along the Bald Eagle Creek in Boggs Township, where the Barnhart family settled.
