New ‘Salon’ Gathering opens in Bellefonte.

Inspired by 1960s San Francisco’s legendary Firehouse Salon, Eric Zimmet is bringing a modern-day Salon to Bellefonte’s historic district.

A new cultural hub, Mugshots, has opened its doors in Bellefonte, promising to revive the spirit of the iconic 1960s salons. This contemporary gathering space, located at 111 E. High St. right by the Centre County Courthouse, is the brainchild of local entrepreneur, Eric Zimmett.

“This is a concept I’ve been planning for five years,” said Zimmett. His initial attempt faced a legal hurdle due to a trademark issue with Reddit, but this only fueled his determination to bring his vision to life. “We’ll try not to get into legal trouble this time; though we did take that into account by playfully calling this new salon ‘Mugshots.’ It’s also conveniently located next to the Centre County Courthouse — just in case,” Zimmett added with a smile.

Mugshots aims to be a melting pot for the creatively inclined and intellectually curious. Influenced by the legendary Firehouse Salon of San Francisco, the space — hosted by Gavel & Quill — is designed to be a confluence for artists, writers, intellectuals, and innovators. The salon is a platform for open discussions, vibrant debates, and unexpected collaborations.

In keeping with the tradition of salons, Mugshots invites anyone engaged in interesting activities or thoughts to join in. “It’s a place where ideas are as free-flowing as the drinks,” said Zimmett, emphasizing the informal and welcoming atmosphere of the salon.

It’s a new chapter in Bellefonte’s rich history, offering a unique blend of cultural and intellectual engagement.
