It's that time of year again...
All of you have made one at one point or another, I know you have.
The dreaded New Years resolution?
Yeah, I made them, too.
And what's crazy? 95% of New Year's resolutions are fitness related... but after just 3
months, only 10% of people think their resolution will last the year.
As a Wellness Coach and Personal Trainer, I’m one of the first people to get excited about your health and wellness goals. However, many people don’t achieve their resolutions because they bust into the new year with loftier goals than they realize.
For many of you, this may be a broader goal of “getting healthier”, but let’s look at a smaller goal within that…
Going to the gym.
This actually takes an abundance of steps when you look closely.
First, you decide which gym is closest to you.
Next, you decide what day and time you’re going to sign up.
Then, you schedule an on-boarding appointment with their on-site trainer.
You attend the session, lay out a plan, and now need to figure out what days you can consistently fit in a workout…
See how the steps start to add up? We haven’t even touched the nutrition side of things.
It’s great to want to be healthier, and I applaud you for taking that step… but many of you are too hard on yourselves. I can totally understand why you feel like you can’t keep up as the months go on. We need to break things into smaller pieces.
Instead of allowing you to give in to the negative self-talk this year, I want to offer you some advice for your 2024 goals.
Instead of the common “all-or-nothing” point of view (e.g. “I’m going to completely overhaul my nutrition and exercise routine”), try setting smaller goals to start. By doing so, you can build confidence and keep the promises to yourself on a more frequent basis.
Here are a few examples (choose ONE at a time):
Drink 1 extra cup of water a day
Take a 5-10 minute walk after 1 meal a day
Get outside for 5-10 minutes a day
Try to do 10 bodyweight squats, lunges, push-ups, and sit-ups 1-3 times a week
Set a deadline for when you want to be “off-duty” from professional commitments
Take 1-3 deep breaths at least once a day
Add a serving of vegetables to 1 meal a day
Turn off your electronic devices 1 hour before bed
Go to bed a ½ hour earlier than usual
Truly, the options are endless.
The trick? You only get to add a goal when you have proven that you can be consistent with one for an entire 7-14 days.
As you continue to prove to yourself that you can accomplish the smaller goals, your momentum will grow stronger. Over the course of the year, you will accomplish so much more than you realize. Chances are you WILL find yourself in the gym consistently when you build up to it.
