Kelly Scott, Vocal Coach, Music Director and all around good person is only a few years into life in Bellefonte but is loving the experience. Below she tells of how she got here and what wonderful talents she brings that helps make Bellefonte a more diverse community.
Are you a Bellefonte Native? If not, where are you originally from?
We moved to Bellefonte in December of 2021 after living outside of Washington DC for about 5 years. However I grew up in Schuylkill County in a small town called Friedensburg, a little over 2 hours from here.
What brought you to live in Bellefonte?
After I had my son in May of 2021, we knew we wanted to move somewhere a little closer to family that also had a great connection to music and the arts, and a community that equally supported it. We have family that graduated from Penn State but we weren’t super familiar with the area outside of State College otherwise. We ended up having some friends that had just moved to Bellefonte and after visiting, we knew this would be the place for us! 6 months after that, we called Bellefonte home
How did you get into being a vocal coach?
As many performers may tell you, I began teaching right out of undergrad as a way to gain income heading into grad school. I knew I liked to teach, but it wasn’t until I finished my Masters in Vocal Performance in 2015 that I realized this was something I wanted to pursue full time.
I love working with performers of all levels and backgrounds to help them get their “ah-ha!” moment when it comes to their voice. I truly believe everyone can sing, and everyone deserves to feel empowered and excited about what their voice is capable of.
There’s nothing like the connection and excitement that happens in the voice studio working with singers.
What do you love about Bellefonte?
I love how supportive and encouraging Bellefonte is towards music and performing arts. From our local bands to our community theatres, Bellefonte has proven to be a supportive community for performers of all backgrounds and genres.
What do you want to see in Bellefonte in the next 5 years?
I’d love to see the accessibility of music and performing arts continue to grow, possibly through more community based music & performance opportunities, especially for adults to get involved. We have so many talented adult singers in our area that don’t have as many outlets to perform as they could. I held a community concert through my studio in November and it was a huge success, so I know the interest is there if we could just reach more people!
Anything you want to say to the Bellefonte Community?
I’m so happy to call Bellefonte home, both for my family and for my business. I can’t wait to continue to connect with our community and continue to bring professional level music and vocal performance opportunities to all that seek it.
