TOWN & BUSINESS

BY A THREAD & THREAD BABY

Emily Boone started with a pop up in town and now she owns two successful boutique stores in our downtown Bellefonte area. She also recently won the Downtown Bellefonte, Inc. Business of the Year Award. To say the least, these last few years have been phenomenal for her. Last year we did an interview with her and she has graciously agreed to update us on her current success. Below is our interview with Emily Boone, owner of By a Thread and Thread Baby.

Tell us a little about yourself and what made you decide to start your original boutique.

I worked in retail during high school and college. I graduated from Penn State in 2013 and spent almost a decade working as a marketer in senior living and healthcare. I always had a love and appreciation for styling and fashion and it became increasingly harder for me to find clothing that was not only fashionable but also work appropriate. For years I toyed with the idea of opening an online clothing boutique but didn’t take any real steps to make that happen - that was until 2018 when I randomly won $500 in a giveaway. In June of 2018, I took the steps to legitimize my business and launched By A Thread the following month. In August of 2018, I hosted my first pop up at my sister's bakery, Sweethearts Confectionery. The following year, I was introduced to Melissa who owned the Cakery and was invited to pop up at her space for Friday in the ‘Fonte. Fast forward to 2020, Melissa was ready to expand and I was ready to take the next steps to commit to my business as a full time endeavor. I opened By A Thread at 135 W High St on November 18th 2020. Now here we are today with By A Thread expanding into a larger space on W Bishop St and Thread Baby opening in our original location!

Tell our readers a little about By A Thread.

By A Thread is all about offering hand selected high quality pieces (clothing, jewelry, and accessories) for the everyday girl - We carry feminine pieces that are unique, comfortable, practical, and versatile for everyday wear.

With the new expansion, what new events and things do you have planned or have already begun doing?

Since the expansion, we have hosted three events in the new space - a floral arrangement and wreath workshop with Rooted Farmstead, our 4th birthday celebration where we hosted Conner Gilbert Music, Weston Workshop, Rooted Farmstead, Arctic Knots, Happy Valley Nomadic Spirits, and Ashley Good from Glow Salon. We also participate in Friday in the ‘Fonte. We have a permanent jewelry workshop coming up as well. I would like to continue to host workshops and community focused events on a regular basis.

Tell our readers a little about Thread Baby - what types of baby clothes can be found there? What makes it unique?

Thread Baby carries clothes, accessories, and gifts from 0-3 months up to 4/5t. We carry pieces for boys, girls, and neutral pieces that may be worn on both boys and girls. It’s important that we carry pieces that are great quality, flattering colors, prints, and fabrics. We want your little ones to have pieces that are complimentary to what we offer at By A Thread.

Who or what inspires you?

I have been really lucky to connect and collaborate with some incredible female entrepreneurs in the local community and I’m so inspired by their grit and tenacity. Just take a look at our socials and you’ll see some of the inspiring women we’ve worked with. Not only is there a mutual support between business owners but a real friendship as well.

What is some advice that you have for our readers?

If there is a dream in your heart, you should go after it and just start. It will never be easy but it will always be worth knowing you pursued your passion.

Any upcoming promotions or special events?

We will host pop up vendors for September and October Friday in the ‘Fonte, a collaboration with other small businesses (more to come on that) and we will be hosting a Fall in the ‘Fonte event

---------------

We are so happy for Emily and the By a Thread family. The community looks forward to seeing it all continue to grow and make Bellefonte an even more wonderful destination to visit, live, and shop. Thank you for your time, Emily!
